The use of "spray paint" by referees is increasing in more countries. It has been used in Brazil for the past ten years, in Argentina the last three years and Mexico the last two years, as well as in Uruguay and Chile and now here in the U.S. in MLS. This product is currently reducing the problems that occur amid contentious player positioning before many free kicks.
The spray makes a white line on the grass or artificial surface which will clearly show encroachment by players attempting to narrow the angle or affect the taking of the kick. Fading out after a few minutes, its use is increasing because it assists referees in game management and is providing good results.
Recently FIFA approved the use of the spray for CONMEBOL. On Sunday, MLS Referee Chico Grajeda used the spray during the match between the LA Galaxy and the New England Revolution.
In a post game interview with US Referee Connection, the referees in charge of that match, commented on the positive effect of the spray saying, “as soon as the players saw the line they did not cross it at all”
There are about four brands of this spray in use but the most popular are “Spuni” from Brazil and “Futline” from Mexico .
I have been using the spray for the last six months and I think it’s great. The number of cautions for encroachment have decreased and I have seen more goals scored from free kicks.
So when you watch MLS games, observe the referees and you may see them using this "miracle spray". |
